Someone sent me the link to Butch Bakery this morning and I simply had to give them a mention.

What is it?

They're a bakery in New York

What makes them special?

Their product. Sure they're just selling "cup cakes", but they've managed to take a simple product and give it a new and interesting twist and that's what caught my attention

The graphical style and other elements on the site all reenforce the concept they're driving - making cupcakes more appealing to boys .. more macho basically

I love it!

Go play with their site

videoeta logoIf, like me, you love film, then you will probably find VideoETA to be incredibly useful.

No. It is not a beautiful website, but boy is it functional.

VideoETA's only purpose is to give you, the viewer, information on DVD and BluRay release dates.

While the dates it uses are US only it's still incredibly useful.

With more and more titles being released at almost the same time on both sides of the Atlantic and a growing number of studios offering "region free" BluRay discs, this sort of service is useful.

Personally I'm an addict!

So, for example, if you loved Avatar and want to know when it's going to be available to own, then VideoETA will be able to tell you that it is currently scheduled for a June release.

Their blog is also a pretty good source of film news, though it may not be on a par with some of the big movie news sites.

Deal A Day

Since everyone seems to be concerned about saving money and getting "deals" it's inevitable that I end up looking at more "deal" sites ...

One that has been around for several years is iBOOD (Internet's Best Online Offer Daily).

Every day they have a different offer on a single product.

What kind of products do they offer?

They all seem to be electronics of some kind and vary from digital cameras to 40" LCD tvs with huge discounts (most seem to be 50% off or more)

While I haven't bought anything from them as yet, anyone who has was happy with the delivery times etc., so it seems to work well

Bidding Can Be Fun

bidrivals-screenshot.png
The idea behind BidRivals isn't that complicated.

They sell electronics, such as Sony Playstation 3, at a fraction of their normal retail price. How? By making it into an auction.

When the clock stops whoever has the bid wins.

Not that complicated really.

You can get more details on how the process works on their site.

While obviously winning isn't that easy I'd view it as a good chance to get a high value item for a fraction of its retail price PLUS it's saner option than a normal betting site...

4gifts direct
One of the companies that won an award at this year's IIA Net Visionaries was 4GiftsDirect.

I ended up using them last year for a couple of hampers as they were still delivering to Irish addresses during Christmas week. Most of the other sites offering hampers etc., had stopped taking Christmas orders several days earlier.

So what makes them special?

Their service "just works".

You find what you're looking for. Pay for it. Provide delivery details and that's it.

No messing about.

It's the way ecommerce is meant to be.

One of the handy features the site offers is the ability to choose gifts based on the type of recipient, so if you're looking for a gift to cheer up your girlfriend, for example, they offer a nice range of ideas for that special someone

Image representing Amazon.com as depicted in C...

I've been buying books, cds, dvds and other stuff from Amazon for about ten years. One of my lecturers in university introduced me to the site and it's been downhill ever since (it's been a wonderful ride, but my credit card suffers!)

While Amazon is not without its flaws (some of its shipping policies have sparked debates in the past) it is still, without a doubt, the best place to shop online as far as I am concerned.

Why?

Because the stock everything from the latest releases through to weird albums that only a handful of people are going to want to buy. A lot of the smaller vendors won't bother, but that's one of Amazon's selling points.

The "recommendations" have led me to discover new music, new writers and a number of new films. At times it will fail miserably by recommending a load of stuff to me simply because I bought a book for my younger sister, but that's acceptable to me.

Amazon makes spending money easy. If the main store doesn't carry the item you want the marketplace vendors probably do!

ebay ireland logo
I am a self-confessed Ebay addict (if such an ailment exists!).

Ebay is simply huge. You can find pretty much anything you've ever thought of on there and if you're not careful you may even stumble across things you didn't even know existed.

I have bought a lot of stuff off eBay over the last few years. Books, CDs, DVDs, electronics, stamps, postcards, watches - the list goes on and on.

There are a couple of reasons why I use eBay.

On the one hand I can save money on a lot of items. Audio cables, for example, cost a fraction on eBay.

Other things I simply cannot find anywhere else, such as CDs from defunct music groups.

The only bad thing about eBay is that you can end up spending so much time and money on there if you're not careful...
